Desperation & Exploitation

Scammers know that desperate people are vulnerable to exploitation.
Have you noticed there are even more scams on the Internet than ever? With so many people desperately seeking employment, Internet scam artists are as abundant as thistles.
They invade your email, pop up on websites, and overrun job and business opportunity boards. Even sites like Craig’s List are choked with them.

Red Flags:
The job or business listing doesn’t list the company name.
They don’t have a website or the website looks unprofessional, has no contact information, or job listings.
They ask you to pay them when you are applying for a job. If you are looking for a job, rather than a business, NEVER send them any money or give them your credit card or bank account information. If it’s a legitimate job opportunity, they won’t ask you for money.
They tell you they need you to pay for training, inventory, credit report, or a security deposit before they will consider you for employment. See above.
They offer you a job without an application or interview.
You are guaranteed wealth or a high income for part-time, unskilled work.
Salary details are unclear.
If it’s a business opportunity, they insist you need to impress them to be qualified.

Do the Research
Using a search engine such as Google, type in the company name with the word scam after it; i.e. “XYZ Company scam”. Also check the Federal Trade Commission and the Better Business Bureau.
Ask for the company’s references, especially if you are looking into a business opportunity. A caveat: be aware that some companies get around this with providing you with the names of “singers,” (people or organizations that are paid to tell you only good things about the company). Singers are also found on sites and forums that try to protect you from scammers.

Evaluating Work at Home Opportunities
Stay away from ‘opportunities’ that ask you to pay for Work at Home Directories or start-up kits. All of the information above also applies.
Avoid stuffing envelopes, assembly work, data entry, claim processing, ad posting, multilevel marketing, or companies that ask for a fee for a list of legitimate work at home opportunities.
Telemarketing and customer service jobs are sometimes legitimate but they require a noise filtering headset. Background noises from children or barking dogs are grounds for termination and they DO monitor calls. Beware of companies trying to sell you their own overpriced headsets and other equipment as a requirement for employment.
For more information on job scams and how to find legitimate opportunities, check out Alison Doyle’s articles.
Good luck weeding through the thistles. I hope you will be able to find the flowers. There really are some out there.

Out of a Far Country by Christopher Yuan and Angela Yuan Book Review

Being neither Chinese, nor gay, I wasn't sure if I would be able to relate to this book about two broken people (actually three, if you include Angela's husband) and their journey toward a closer relationship with each other and with God.

Out of a Far Country by Christopher Yuan and Angela Yuan is powerfully told by Angela, who is devastated when she learns her son is gay and Christopher, her gay son. As their stories unfold, it is easy to relate to the emotions and experiences of both.

It is also easy to understand how misunderstandings and lack of communication can play a role in shaping lives and destructive decision making.

I kept routing for all of them to find a way to make the right decisions to achieve spiritual and individual joy as well as happiness as a family.

Angela and Christopher speak world wide about God's desire for prodigals of all types to return to Him.

I received this book free from Waterbrook Press in exchange for my honest review.

Mary Russel's Children's Books

Time to toot my own horn a bit. :)

Mary Russel's Children's Books

Flickertail & Paint Barnyard Sleuths

$ 12.95 USD

Flickertail the llama & Paint the horse are peace keepers and peace lovers. They understand the value of teamwork, love, and friendship. They believe in helping others. Join them in the fun and antics as they solve various barnyard mysteries and help their friends find solutions to a variety of problems in this anthology of heartwarming and sometimes funny tales.

Suggestions for Educators

Each story contains at least one unfamiliar word to help expand vocabulary.

Have the children guess what each monster is in Taffy’s Monsters.

Learn history in the Horse Heroes of WWI, The Case of the Missing Shoes, and Scotland’s Battle of Bannockburn. The children might enjoy reenacting the battle too.

Test math skills in Is She or Isn’t She.

Explore Bolivia and its culture in Flickertail’s Llama Mama.

Just like Flickertail & Paint, put on a play based on Agatha Christie’s Halloween Party.

Have the children discuss what they might have done differently to help Flickertail’s and Paint’s friends.

The stories in Flickertail & Paint, Barnyard Sleuths are fun and intriguing. The purpose of the book is to capture imagination and pique curiosity to encourage further research and exploration.

Rudolph, a Child's Love Story

$ 12.95 USD

Why I Decided to Share Rudolph, a Child’s Love Story
We are all the sum of our past experiences. Although fictionalized, Rudolph, a Child’s Love Story was written as therapy and as an effort to make sense of an unhappy early childhood. I needed to put my past behind me and to move on.
As I wrote it, some wonderful things happened. I realized that children and adults who have felt unwanted, unloved, and unaccepted might benefit from it. Perhaps, through my words, they too would discover the power of knowing they are worthy of love and happiness.

Perhaps, my story could help to heal the hurt and stop the pain. Perhaps, like me, they would also begin to understand and to forgive.
When 10 year old Becky learns her family isn’t her birth family, she has a difficult time accepting it. She feels betrayed by her birth mother and she wonders what she did to cause her mother to give her up. An adopted friend tells her that the difference between being adopted and foster is that he has a forever home while her birth mother can take her away from her foster family at any time.
Feeling insecure and frightened, Becky asks her foster mother why they haven’t adopted her.

The One Day Way by Chantel Hobbs Book Review

Having just submitted a review for my latest book from Blogging for Books, It was time to choose another free book to review. Usually, I have no problem finding something that looks interesting but this time, the selection didn't excite me. I finally settled on The One Day Way, even though other diet books had failed me. Perhaps, as Chantel suggests in her book, I didn't pick up The One Day Way by accident.

I don't know yet, if this book will help me lose weight and become more fit but I do like Chantel's philosophy of taking it one day at a time, celebrating even the smallest of victories, and refusing to focus on perceived failures.

I have a craving for chocolate around 3pm each day. If I tell myself I cannot have any more chocolate until I have lost all of the weight I need to lose, I will most likely see that as an impossible goal. It will be easier to tell myself that, just for today, I will not indulge. This is doable and, at the end of the day, I can give myself a pat on the back for having met the challenge. If I can do that today, perhaps I can do it again tomorrow.

Each achievement, no matter how small, will make me stronger and more able to take on other challenges

Chantel's plan focuses on faith, food, and fitness. The book includes easy to make menu suggestions and exercises that use a medicine ball and resistance bands. I already have these so I have no excuses to keep me from getting started.

I have faith that I can do this and I can start today -- The One Day Way.

My About.Me page courtesy of BzzAgent

I actually signed up for a splash page in this website several months ago through BzzAgent. Now BzzAgent is running a campaign about About.Me so I thought I would tell you a little about the site. My splash page link, if you would like to check it out is http://about.me/maryrussel

I like that you can link to most of your profile pages from your About.Me splash page. I need to upgrade mine but you will note that it currently includes my links to my blog, my LinkedIn, my Twitter, and my Facebook pages.

I chose the background photo when I only had three published books but I'll probably keep that one there for awhile anyway because I like the way it covers a large area of the screen and how I can add the text I want without covering up anything important.

if you sign up for it now (it's free) you can also get free business cards but you do have to pay for the shipping.
